About Lou

Hi I’m Lou Davis!

I’m an artist who is totally in love with patterns of all kinds! I use all kinds of patterns in my work, and particularly appreciate intricate and delicate patterns, built up of repeating shapes and marks. I also enjoy learning about patterns from history, and appreciating the skill of those who constructed them and those who pass on their knowledge down through centuries.

I have a PhD in Theology and Religious studies crossed with Printmaking which involved drawing lots of patterns and appreciating and interpreting the symbolism they carry. You can call me Dr Lou if you like! Since my PhD, I have been inspired by rediscovering Celtic art, and in particular, those of the places near to me, from my birthplace in the North East of England, to Scotland, where I currently enjoy living. It may be a romantic notion, but from my quiet studio table, I feel an affinity across the ages, with the communities of faith in whose scriptoria these detailed and beautiful works of art were composed.

I’ve been working in Art education for over 20 years and for the last five have been teaching online through my free tutorials on YouTube. I have produced over 200 painting and drawing tutorials, including quite a few Celtic art projects.

Welcome to my Pattern Library where I share monthly projects and lifetime access courses sharing how to create patterns of all kinds, including some beautiful Celtic designs.
